Create Targeted Videos To Reach Your Audience

Video skills for academics

Videos can be so easy to make: you pick up your smartphone or tablet, hit record, do your thing, and voila – you have a video!

But how do you create a video that will be seen by the right people?

This week we share three tips that will help you think strategically about your videos: helping them get seen by the right people.

1. Define The Target Audience

Videos are a form of communication. Before shooting your next video, think about who you want to communicate with, and narrow it right down. Who is your target audience for this video? Who are you trying to reach? Be really clear on who they are, so you can speak to them directly.

Narrow it down until you have your target audience down to one individual. Give this persona a name.

2. Pick One Key Message

Keep your videos very simple. Narrow your communication down to just one key message. Don’t overwhelm your audience with details, statistics, or complexity. Keep your messaging clear and simple.

If you have a lot of information to communicate, consider making many videos: each of which only covers one message.

3. 90 Seconds

Aim for a duration of 90 seconds maximum. Think about this as you plan the video. What will you say that will fit the duration and speak to your target audience?
