THE POWER OF VIDEO

Video is a very powerful medium. It engages us through sight, sound and story, and we often find ourselves completely immersed when watching a video.

Stories are powerful, and video is the perfect medium for telling a story well.

Being so visual, videos can explain concepts that can be difficult to articulate in written words alone. In this way, they can cross language, cultural and other barriers.

This is an excellent example of explaining a sensitive topic that may be difficult to articulate only using words.

The proliferation of smartphones has led to the democratisation of video media, and indeed other media. It can be very fast and simple to create a video, upload it online and share it with millions of people: all within a short space of time and on zero budget.

Video is versatile

Video is a highly versatile form of media. Video footage can be edited in an unlimited number of ways: it can be cut with other footage, effects can be applied to it, screen grabs can be taken from it, and the audio can be used for other purposes such as for radio or a podcast.

Video can be used for a number of purposes, such as:

• Product or course launch

• Student or customer testimonials

• FAQs

• Promotional (introduction to course/ subject)

• Documentaries

• Website banner videos

• Short social media clips

• Expert interviews as value-adding content.

There are so many ways to use video. For example, once you’ve shot an interview you can upload it to your website, social media platforms, and share it with colleagues to promote your work. Photo by Sam McGhee on Unsplash
