When it comes to shooting video, it’s important to think about where your videos will be watched. What devices will your audience watch with? What size will the screen be?
We always recommend shooting in landscape orientation, and this week we will do our best to convince you to do so for your videos!
1. Screen orientation

Most screens are in landscape orientation. If you shoot in landscape, your video will fill the screen. However if you shoot in portrait orientation, your video will be cut off on the sides.
If your video will be uploaded to YouTube and your audience might watch on their computer or television, ensure it is shot in landscape to begin with.
2. How we see the world

We see the world in landscape: we see more out of our periphery than above and below. This is why most screens are in landscape format.
So it makes sense to shoot your videos in landscape, too. This way they will be correctly orientated for most screens.
3. Future proof

Even if you’ll post your video to Instagram or another platform that does not use landscape format, you can cut the sides of the video or add bars so that the video fits the format. If your videos will mostly be posted to platforms that use landscape format, you are better off shooting in that format, and editing the video for those few other formats as needed.
This helps future-proof your videos.
