This week we share practical tips to help you steady your smartphone when you’re shooting your next video. By keeping your device stable while shooting, you will achieve far better results with your video content.
What Is A Tripod?
A tripod is a three-legged stand that is attached to your video recording device. They come in many different forms and range from small, short desktop tripods to full-size tripods that can be extended to the height of a person. Tripods are commonly used in the film and television industry.
Why Use A Tripod

There are so many advantages of using a tripod when shooting video. Here are a few key reasons to consider using one for your next video shoot.
- By setting up your camera on a tripod, its position is set and your camera position will not change. This will help make video editing easier because you will have better continuity between your takes.
- Your hands will be free. You can now use them to gesticulate while you are on camera, or you can have more freedom of movement when working with the talent.
- If you are shooting yourself on camera, you can now step out in front of it and not be restricted by the length of your arm – meaning that you can position yourself further away from the camera if you wish.
- The camera will be held steady, meaning that your shots will be stable (not shaky). This will result in dramatically better footage than shooting without a tripod.
Tripod Examples

There are a variety of tripods available for you to choose from. The kind of tripod that is right for you will depend on the type of video camera you are using (including its weight) and how you will use the tripod. For example, if like in the picture, you plan to attach your camera to a difficult surface such as a handrail, consider a gorilla grip style of tripod: one in which you can twist the legs of the tripod around the object you wish to attach your camera to.
You can also consider a desktop tripod: this will have more solid legs and be quite short: the idea being that you set up your camera on your desk (and sit at your desk while recording).
Otherwise, consider a full length tripod. This style sits on the ground and can extend to approximately the height of a person. This style has an adjustable length (unlike the other styles above) and therefore gives you more options. Also, because you aren’t constrained by the height of your desk, you can use this style of tripod in more situations (for example whether the talent is seated or standing).
