No More Humbug

Client

Kimberley Jiyigas (Birds) based in the Kimberley in Western Australia.

Brief

To produce an engaging animation that would represent Aboriginal communities and their stories that relate to “humbugging”. The goal of the animation is to raise awareness of this issue. The animation is part of a toolkit developed by Kimberley Jiyigas, commissioned by Kimberley Community Legal Services with financial support of the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department.

The toolkit aims to help reduce Aboriginal financial Elder abuse in the Kimberley.

Audience

Aboriginal communities across Australia.

Solution

We collaborated closely with our client to work through their research findings and craft a story that was authentic and would speak to the target audience. The story was refined through focus groups, and the character names were selected because they would be widely understood across Aboriginal communities. We then engaged an artist in Melbourne to design the characters and craft the colour palette based on references provided by the client. After our storyboard and character designs were approved, we then moved into animation production: adding music and sound effects to finalise the video. We produced two versions of the final video: one in English and one in Kimberley Kriol.

Result

The animations are part of a toolkit that belong to Australians: they are available to download and share widely. The toolkit is sparking conversations about humbugging and what communities can do to help tackle this important issue.
