Be Passionate on Camera: It’s powerful and palpable

When we speak – whether it’s on camera, during a videoconference or on stage – people don’t tend to remember what we said. They remember how we made them feel.

Your words matter, but how they are said can have more of a lasting impact. While the power of language is undeniable, of equal importance is your delivery.

Remember this the next time you’re on camera. When you are speaking about a topic that’s close to your heart, do it with passion.

Why do you work in your field?

Think back and consider what motivated you to work in your field. Did a personal experience lead to your work? Did you choose your field because you wanted to make a difference? Are you passionate about the environment and want to inspire people to do more to protect it?

Don’t be afraid to tell your audience who you are. Why do you care so deeply about your work? Personal stories are unique and memorable: don’t leave them out of your video content. 

Use emotive language

As human beings, we are inspired by people who are passionate and driven. Use language in your videos that generates these feelings both for you and your audience. Emotive language will help you perform with more vigour, and will also be more engaging – and memorable – for your audience.

Use your body in your performance

When we’re speaking with passion, we tend to bring our entire body into the performance. Do this the next time you are on camera. Think about how to express your emotions using your facial features, and how to use your hands and arms for greater impact. Don’t over-gesticulate though: use your hands and arms so that they are natural but not so expressive to the point that there’s a disconnect between the energy of your vocal performance and your physical performance. Also, when you’re on camera, keep your feet and legs still: only move your hands and arms.
